Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre is privately managed and operated by The GEO Group Australia under contract to Queensland Corrective Services.

It is the remand and reception centre for South East Queensland with a single bed capacity for 710 prisoners and an annual prisoner movement of approximately 23,500.

The centre is a complex operation due to the diversity of the prisoner population who require varying degrees of protection, separation and special management.

High Security: The centre provides high security accommodation for remand and sentenced prisoners in both mainstream and protection units with additional units for youth offenders and maximum security.

Reception and Remand: The operation includes the reception and processing of all sentenced and remand prisoners from police custody and the courts. The centre is responsible for the calculation of the term of imprisonment, classification of sentenced prisoners and the preparation of initial sentence plans.

Sentence Management: The Sentence Management Department ensures compliance with the directions contained in warrants issued by all courts.

Specialist Services for Reintegration with Community

Professional services are supplied to assist prisoners to cope with incarceration and prepare them for release into the community. These services include psychological, psychiatric, counselling and specialist referrals.

Health Care

Holistic health care is provided with 24-hour nursing cover and an on-call medical officer. The health centre has single and multi-ward hospital beds for acute, chronically ill and infirm prisoners.

Food Services: Food services offers a variety of balanced, nutritional meals delivered against a cyclic menu approved by a qualified dietician.

Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre’s food service team has been acknowledged for its efficiency and quality control, achieving Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points accreditation (HACCP) for the past two years and also meeting ISO 9002 requirements during that period.

About 2500 meals are prepared each day at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre and there is also the need to cater for up to 70 people with special dietary requirements.

Centre Information and Activities Committee

Management maintains a highly successful liaison with inmates through fortnightly meetings of the Centre Information and Activities Committee. Educational activities and selected hobby projects also provide opportunities to maintain a positive environment.

Programs: The centre offers prisoners participation in programs to address offending behaviour including anger management, drug and alcohol relapse prevention, cognitive skills and the ATSI ending offending program. This centre also offers vocational training, literacy and numeracy and an extensive recreational and fitness regime.

Industries: Industries consist of printing, woodworking and textiles. These allow prisoners to develop useful trade skills to assist with their successful reintegration into the community. The program employs 20 prisoners for woodworking, 20 in textiles and four in the print shop. The centre also employs a further 137 prisoners in general operational areas.
