Building a successful career

In 1997 Jim Sanders was a content bricklayer with a secure job in a stable industry. But then he saw an advertisement for employment as a correctional officer at Fulham Correctional Centre and thought he would give it a try. 500 eucalypts provide koala fodder

Inmates at Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre have taken another step in their mission to help save the koala, planting the last of 500 eucalyptus saplings at the facility. The trees will be harvested biannually to feed koalas at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. August 2010 more

A Pacific welcome

The Pacific Island ethnic groups at Parklea Correctional Centre recently came together to promote their culture and to informally welcome new general manager Peter Ma’a. Since GEO took over the management of Parklea there has been a strong emphasis on introducing the company’s cultural programs. August 2010 more

Parklea joins GEO family

Parklea Correctional Centre joined The GEO Group Australia late last year following the company’s successful tender for the contract to manage the facility. The handover marked the first time an operational publicly managed prison in Australia had been transferred to private management. A maximum security remand prison, Parklea holds up to 823 male inmates. April 2010 more

Outback ‘in-car-ceration’

Four GEO colleagues recently enjoyed the highs and lows of the Australian outback with the support of GEO, their sponsors and the skills of four Junee inmates. In the cleverly named ‘In-car-ceration’ they entered The Great Escape charity motoring rally and raised over $8000 for research into cystic fibrosis. April 2010 more

Green thumbs in Brisbane

The Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre is playing a vital role in the greening of Brisbane with employees supporting Brisbane City Council’s initiative to plant two million trees throughout the city by 2012. Arthur Gorrie colleagues and their families recently planted 880 trees at the Wolston Creek bushcare site. April 2010 more

Junee sets pace on environment

Junee Correctional Centre has become the first prison in Australia – and one of the first in the world – to be globally recognised for its commitment to the environment. The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has awarded Junee with an International Certification of Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) for its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The bird men of Fulham

Fulham Correctional Centre and the local Maffra and District Landcare Network have combined to help protect native wildlife by building nest boxes. They are available for people to install on their farm, backyard or in a public reserve to create a home for native animals and birds. September 2009 more

Key management roles filled

The GEO Group Australia has filled two key management roles in recent months with Walker Nuku Manaena accepting the position of general manager at Junee Correctional Centre and Jill Carson appointed general manager of Pacific Shores Healthcare. September 2009 more
